Mauritius - Fishing

DEEP-SEA FISHING

Mauritius has some of the best deep-sea fishing waters you can find and people come from all over the world just for that reason. World-record catches off Mauritius include the mako shark, blue shark, skipjack tuna and the renowned blue marlin. In 2010, the island had its best fishing year for around 15 years. Although the west coast is regarded as the best area for deep-sea fishing, the northern and eastern coasts can offer rewarding trips.

If the primary purpose of your visit to Mauritius is fishing, you may want to take account of the following seasons:

Wahoo/hammerhead shark                           September–December

Blue marlin/sailfish                                       November–March

Mako shark                                                     November–April

Yellow fin tuna                                               March–May

Black marlin, skipjack tuna, barracuda          all year

Most of the deep-sea fishing companies operate modern, well-equipped boats that can reach deep waters in no time at all. The boats usually have three ‘fighting’ chairs in the stern and outriggers so that three baits can be trolled at a time. Any fish that is caught remains the property of the boat owner, although ‘tag and release’ is starting to be practised in Mauritius, and is used at Beachcomber hotels.

Almost all hotels will be able to arrange deep-sea fishing and some of the more upmarket ones will have their own fishing centres. Tour operators will also be able to organise trips.

In most cases, the crew of deep-sea fishing boats are incredibly poorly paid, particularly when you consider the amount of skill involved. If you feel that they have looked after you well, a tip will make a lot of difference to them.

The price will vary between boats, but a half-day trip (usually six hours) costs from around Rs15,000 per boat (usually six people) and a full day (usually nine hours) Rs20,000. This will include all the equipment, snacks and drinks.
