A luxury hotel in a quiet location on a pretty bay. 76 junior suites, 12 senior suites & 1 ‘princely suite’, some of which are on stilts over the water. All are very private & superbly appointed with large en suite, balcony/terrace & free Wi-Fi. 9 senior suites have a private pool. The main pool is brilliantly designed & when viewed from the hotel foyer seems to flow into the sea. There are 3 restaurants, including Le Barachois, a small floating restaurant. There is a very impressive Guerlain spa & a wide range of free watersports. Other amenities include a gym, squash, tennis, library, kids’ club & free access to the golf courses of Constance Belle Mare Plage Golf . The service is discreet & you really do feel pampered. $$$$$

This member of ‘Leading Hotels of the World’ boasts 148 luxurious junior suites, 14 ocean suites & ‘The Villa’, an extravagant 2-bedroomed monument to self-indulgence. The junior suites have a view of either the sea or lagoon & come with butler service, as well as everything else you’d expect from a first-class hotel. 1 junior suite is suitable for disabled guests. There are 3 lavish restaurants, including the Spoon des Iles, which serves innovative international cuisine at heart-stopping prices. Facilities include a casino, a Gary Player-designed 9-hole golf course & a Givenchy spa, which offers such vital services as ‘herbal wraps’, ‘skin peeling’ & ‘special lifting objectives’. Free watersports include water skiing & small-game fishing. There are 5 tennis courts, a gym offering personal training & a dive centre. As well as a kids’ club, there is 1 for teenagers. The hotel prides itself on its service & is the only hotel on the island to offer a beach concierge service. $$$$$
Upmarket

Although this is a big hotel, there is plenty of space so it doesn’t tend to feel too crowded. As well as 235 rooms & suites, there are 20 luxurious 2- & 3-bedroom villas & a presidential villa. There are 2 rooms with disabled facilities. The accommodation is stylish & comfortable, with the usual upmarket amenities. The villas are impressive, each with private pool & butler service. There are 7 restaurants, including the first-class Blue Penny Café & those at the golf courses. A popular hotel with golfers, who take advantage of the 2 18-hole championship courses. Also available are a choice of 4 pools, a fitness centre, spa, tennis, watersports & a kids’ club. Good value for money. $$$$

The abundance of concrete means it is rather less attractive than its thatched competitors. The en-suite rooms have AC, TV, phone, minibar, safe & balcony/terrace. There are 2 restaurants (1 Moroccan), a spa, watersports & kids’ club. Free Wi-Fi in the bar & reception. At the bottom end of the upmarket range in terms of price but the facilities are closer to mid-range. $$$$

It is on the site of the old Coco Beach Hotel & care was taken to protect the environment during the knock-down-rebuild process – 1.5 million plants were removed & replanted & the new hotel was designed to use green energy, in particular solar. The 5 restaurants, bars & a nightclub sit around a central plaza, giving a village feel. The dining options are excellent & include Chinese, Japanese & Italian. The sports facilities are extensive & include a pool, tennis courts, watersports (non-motorised are free), pitch & putt & a climbing wall. $$$$
A Lux Belle Mare (174 rooms, 12 villas) Belle Mare; % 402 2000; f 415 2020; e reservations[at]luxislandresorts.com; luxislandresorts.com. Located on a good stretch of beach is this large resort hotel (formerly Beau Rivage), whose rooms & suites are in 3-storey buildings with thatched roofs. Rooms are spacious & equipped with AC, TV, phone, safe, minibar & balcony/terrace. The luxury villas are delightful & have kitchenette, dining room, butler service, sumptuous bathroom, private garden & plunge pool. The hotel has a spa, an impressive pool with palm trees seemingly growing in it, tennis courts, a gym & kids’ club. Free watersports include water skiing. Aside from the main restaurant, there is a Mediterranean beach restaurant, a seafood one & a very nice Indo-Chinese one. HB & AI packages available. $$$$
A The Residence (163 rooms) Belle Mare; % 401 8888; f 415 5888; e info-mauritius[at] theresidence.com; theresidence.com. The entrance is suitably grand for a hotel which is impressive in every way. The style is intended to be that of a colonial palace. The rooms & suites are spacious & beautifully decorated, equipped with everything you need, including butler service. The bathrooms deserve special mention – they are superb. Surprisingly for a modern luxury hotel, not all the rooms face the sea but those with a view of the garden are cheaper. There are 4 restaurants, including the unforgettable La Plantation right on the beach. Facilities include an excellent kids’ club, tennis courts, many free watersports (inc water skiing) & a fabulous spa. Reasonable value for money. $$$$
Mid range
A Emeraude Hotel (61 rooms) Coastal Rd, Belle Mare; % 401 1400; f 415 1109; e info[at]hotelemeraude-mauritius.com; emeraudebeachhotel.com. Across the road from the northern end of the beach, 2-storey white cottages with thatched roofs are scattered in a garden. The hotel changed hands in 2010 & underwent an extensive renovation. All rooms are en suite but with shower only, no bath. They are clean & simply furnished with AC, TV & phone. The hotel sets up a bar on the beach during the day so its guests don’t have to run back across the road for drinks. Guests can also get a boat to Ile aux Cerfs from sister hotel, Le Tropical at Trou d’Eau Douce. There are 2 small pools, a tiny spa offering massage & beauty therapies, a restaurant & a bar with sand floor. Diving & kitesurfing are available. Glass-bottom boat & snorkelling are included. The all-inclusive package is good value. $$$

At the time of writing, the hotel had just been bought by Sun Resorts & was under renovation, due to re-open in October 2012 as a 4-star equivalent hotel. Rooms have contemporary décor, AC, TV, phone, minibar, safe & balcony/terrace. Family units have 2 bedrooms. There are 3 restaurants, 2 bars, a nightclub, pool, spa, gym, extensive watersports, tennis courts, kids’ club & teenagers’ club. Internet & Wi-Fi access is available. It is on a great stretch of beach. $$$
A Palmar Beach Resort (76 rooms) Coastal Rd, Belle Mare; % 402 3500; f 415 1043; e resa[at]veranda-resorts.com; veranda-resorts.com. An informal Veranda Group hotel on a superb stretch of beach. The nicely decorated en-suite rooms are equipped with AC, TV, phone, minibar, safe & balcony/terrace. There are 2 restaurants (one on the beach), 2 bars, a pool, spa, kids’ club & a good choice of free watersports. Bike hire is available & guests have use of the facilities at other Veranda hotels. $$$
Budget
A La Maison d’Eté (10 rooms) Coastal Rd, Poste Lafayette; %/f 410 5039; e info[at]lamaisondete.com; lamaisondete.com. A great find for those wanting the option of self-catering. Beautifully decorated throughout with great attention to detail, it feels modern & clean, yet warm & cosy. There are 4 en-suite rooms & 6 bungalows with kitchenette. All rooms have a generous bathroom/dressing area & are equipped with fan, safe, emergency button (now compulsory in guesthouses) & minibar. There is room to dine either in the room or on your terrace, & there is also a good restaurant on site (see below). There are 2 pools & the owners have made an inviting private beach area with loungers, plus there is the option of the adjacent public beach. There are no motorised watersports here, which makes it very peaceful, but kayaks & snorkelling equipment are available free of charge, as are bikes. Excellent value for money. $$
