Mauritius - Things To Do

MARKETS There is a market in Centre de Flacq on Wednesdays and Sundays.

ILE AUX CERFS For those whose hotels don’t provide trips to Ile aux Cerfs, there are other ways of getting there. Almost every second person you pass in Trou d’Eau Douce will offer to take you there but be wary as their service may not be reliable, particularly when it comes to bringing you back again. Operators with good reputations include Vicky Tours (% 754 5597; bateauxvicky[at]yahoo.com) and the Trou d’Eau Douce Co-operative Ferry (% 519 0452), both located at the northern end of Trou d’Eau Douce. Expect to pay around Rs300 per person return by ordinary boat, which takes around 15 minutes, or around double those prices by speedboat, which only takes around five minutes. Boats leave at regular intervals, usually every 30 minutes between 09.00 and 16.30 but you should confirm with your particular operator the time of the last trip back to the mainland. The departure point is clearly marked in Trou d’Eau Douce and you can buy tickets on the spot.

A number of operators, such as White Sand Tours (% 208 5424) and Vicky Tours, offer full-day group excursions to Ile aux Cerfs, which usually include a barbecue and a visit by boat to the small waterfall at Grande Rivière Sud-est. Such excursions cost around Rs1,000 per person.

Buy essential oils The east of the island is the place to buy essential oils. Laurianne Ghansseeram sells oils and candles from her small kiosk in Anse Jonchée

THEME PARK

Le Waterpark and Leisure Village (Coastal Rd, Belle Mare; % 415 2626; f 415 2929; e lewaterpark[at]intnet.mu; lewaterpark.intnet.mu; ( 10.00–17.30 daily; admission adult/child Rs450/250) An amusement park with numerous waterslides and fairground rides, located amidst the agricultural land opposite the public beach.

YACHTING/CATAMARAN CRUISES Catamaran cruises and sailing trips frequently depart from Trou d’Eau Douce, usually stopping off at Ile aux Cerfs. For details, see Chapter 3, Sailing, pages 93–4.

DEEP-SEA FISHING While the east coast is not as highly regarded for deep-sea fishing as the west coast, fishing trips are available. For details, see Chapter 3, Deep-sea fishing, pages 88–9.

GOLF Some of the island’s best golf courses are on the east coast. For details, see Chapter 3, Golf, pages 86–7.

WHAT TO SEE IN EASTERN MAURITIUS

KESTREL VALLEY (Anse Jonchée; % 634 5011; f 634 5261; e ledomaine[at]intnet.mu; kestrelvalley.com; ( 08.30–16.30 Mon–Fri; hiking without guide Rs150, hiking with guide Rs300) A stony track leads from the coast road to the estate. Nature trails wind through the forest on the slopes of the Bamboo Mountains, home to Javanese deer, wild boar, monkeys, hare and the famed Mauritius kestrel. The area can be explored on foot by following one of the marked trails (2–6km) or with a guide. Hunting is also available, with guns and guides provided (see Chapter 3, Hunting, page 88). There is a good restaurant and rustic accommodation is available. Wear sturdy shoes, plenty of insect repellent and suncream.
