There is certainly no shortage of accommodation in Grand Baie; as well as hotels, there are copious apartments and houses to rent. Much of the accommodation is cheap and cheerful.
Luxury

Located at Grand Sable, adjoining Grand Baie, this is the flagship of the Beachcomber Group & a member of ‘Leading Hotels of the World’. The luxurious suites are on 3 storeys. They’re thoughtfully decorated with colonial-style furnishings & have all the features that you would expect from a world-class hotel, including personal butler service & internet access in the suites. There are excellent sports facilities & most watersports are free. Service is first-class & no wonder – the hotel claims that staff outnumber guests by 3 to 1. The atmosphere is peaceful with an air of self-satisfied superiority – photos of the celebrities who have stayed here adorn a wall, reminding you how lucky you are to be there. $$$$$
Upmarket

The rooms are decorated individually, with a homely, elegant, colonial style. All rooms have a stylish en suite, AC, flat-screen TV, DVD player, phone, Wi-Fi, minibar, safe, tea/coffee facilities & balcony/terrace. The 6 suites have an outdoor jacuzzi or plunge pool. The beach is small & it’s a windy spot but there are good beaches nearby. There are 2 restaurants, a bar, pool, small spa & some watersports. Guests can dine on the hotel’s restored 1929 motorboat or sail to Flat Island, where the hotel can provide lunch at a little restaurant. Popular with French & Belgian travellers. Children under 5 years are not permitted at the hotel. The hotel also offers 4 luxury villas nearby. $$$$

A lively, centrally located hotel at the bottom end of upmarket or the top end of mid-range, 4-star equivalent. Rooms have AC, TV, phone, safe, minibar & balcony/terrace. Family apartments have 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. More upmarket accommodation is available in private villa with pool. The beach area is rather small but pleasant. Extensive facilities include a shopping centre, 2 pools, a gym, spa, tennis, a kids’ club & a nightclub. The usual watersports are on offer & there’s a dive centre. The building isn’t pretty but this is a popular, mass-market hotel with lots going on. $$$$
Mid range

Colourful en-suite rooms, either in an uninspiring 3-storey block or thatched cottages (deluxe & family rooms). All face the sea & have AC, TV, phone, minibar, safe & balcony/terrace. Facilities include a restaurant, pool, spa, tennis, gym, the usual watersports & a dive centre. There is a nice wide beach & the nightlife of Grand Baie is close by. Entertainment every evening. $$$
A Veranda Grand Baie Hotel & Spa (94 rooms & apts) Coastal Rd, Grand Baie; % 209 8000; f 263 7369; e resa[at]veranda-resorts.com; veranda-resorts.com. Recently refurbished hotel on the beach near the centre of Grand Baie, equivalent to 3 stars. Rooms have AC, TV, phone, minibar, safe, tea/coffee facilities. Family apartments have a kitchenette. Facilities include 2 restaurants, 2 pools, tennis courts, gym, spa, kids’ club & a good beach. Prices include some watersports & access to facilities at other Veranda Group hotels. $$$
Budget

A Mediterranean-style complex on a pleasant beach offering a range of accommodation, including 3- & 4-bedroom self-catering apartments, studios & double rooms. All have en suite, AC, TV, phone & Wi-Fi (payable). The villas have a good kitchen, complete with proper cooker & oven. 2- & 3-storey villas accommodate up to 9 people but prices are according to the number of guests, so you don’t pay for 6 when there are only 2 of you. There’s a nice pool, restaurant, barbecue facilities & maid service. Excursions & watersports can be arranged (payable). Worth considering if you are a large family or group. $$

No-frills accommodation across the road from the beach in the centre of Grand Baie. Rooms are simple & colourful, with en suite, AC, TV, safe, tea/coffee facilities, fridge & balcony. Massage & beauty treatments are available. The bar & restaurant on the ground floor are modern & trendy. Also helpful are the free Wi-Fi in the rooms, daily maid service, beach towels & free 15-minute welcome massage. Close to shops, nightlife & watersports but not suitable for those looking for a peaceful retreat. $$

Behind a row of shops, with the main road, private bungalows & large gardens between it & the beach. The rooms, studios & 2-bedroom family units are in small 2-storey blocks grouped around a pool. All come with en suite, AC, TV & phone, & most have a balcony/terrace. There is a good Indian/Creole restaurant here. $$
