Mauritius - Nightlife

NIGHTLIFE Most hotels in the mid-range and upmarket categories organise evening entertainment in the form of live bands, séga nights or themed evenings. However, for nightlife outside of the hotels, Grand Baie is the place to go in the north. Most nights of the week you will find something going on, although Sundays are a little quieter. Entry to nightclubs is typically around Rs100–150 or free, and is more likely to be free for females than males.

Bars, like Banana Café (% 263 8540), with loud music and sand on the floor, are open all day until late, closing only when they feel like it. Banana Café has been around for years and soon becomes a favourite for most visitors to Grand Baie. Lounging in comfy chairs and twiddling your feet in the sand certainly has its appeal. Cocoloko (% 263 1241) restaurant/bar draws a good crowd. The décor is very pleasant, there are big screens for sports fans and free Wi-Fi. Bay Lounge (% 258 1700; ( 10.00–late daily) across the road from the ocean has plenty of atmosphere – comfy chairs are dotted around a courtyard with a coral floor and there is a dance floor inside for party animals. Crêpes, pizzas and light meals are available. Beach House Bar (% 263 2599) to the north of town is another trendy restaurant/bar on the beach. South African-run pub/restaurant Patch ’n’ Parrot at Pointe aux Canonniers (% 2269 0374; ( 10.00–late) opened in 2009, and expats and tourists flock there for the tropical pub atmosphere, dancing and a variety of sports on the big screen.

The nights for clubbing in Grand Baie are typically Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Popular dance spots are Les Enfants Terribles (% 263 8117) on the road to Pointe aux Canonniers and Takamaka (% 747 4563) on the coastal road. Les Enfants Terribles has several bars and attracts a slightly older crowd than some of the other nightspots. Zanzibar (% 263 3265; ( 23.00–late Mon–Sat), is an old favourite for many. Other options include the Godfather Club (% 263 3000) on the beach near the Royal Palm; it has several rooms each with different types of music, and is popular with locals and tourists. N’Gyone, to the north of the town centre, has a modern, European feel and next door is Buddha Bar (% 263 7664).

Money and banking Perhaps because there are so many opportunities to spend money in Grand Baie, there are several bank counters that are open outside normal bank hours, enabling visitors to change travellers’ cheques or to withdraw cash. Most are open 08.00–18.00 Monday–Saturday, 09.00–14.00 Sunday. There are numerous ATMs in Grand Baie, mostly along the coastal road.

Communications The post office (( 08.15–16.00 Mon–Fri, 08.15–11.45 Sat) is in the Richmond Hill Complex next to the Super U supermarket on La Salette Road. There are numerous payphones in Grand Baie.

The post office has internet access, or you can try Grand Baie Cyber Café near the Ti Fleur Soleil Hotel.
