Mauritius - Tromelin

Mauritius and the Seychelles claim sovereignty over Tromelin but France owns it and Madagascar wants it. It is a flat, sandy, barren place, less than 2km long and about 640m wide. It lies between the St Brandon Archipelago and Madagascar, actually closer to Madagascar than Port Louis, which is 482km away.

Mauritius’s claim to ownership is based on the capitulation terms of 1810, as Tromelin was regarded then as a dependency of Mauritius. In 1954, the British allowed the French to build a meteorological station and landing strip on the island. France and Mauritius agreed a co-management treaty in 2010.

Tromelin is an important seabird nesting site, in particular for masked and red-footed boobies.

It was known in the 18th century as Ile aux Sables or Sandy Island. In 1761, a French vessel was shipwrecked on the reef which extends from its southern point. The whites in the crew built a boat and reached Madagascar safely. They left 80 blacks on the island, promising to return. It was 15 years before a French chevalier, M Tromelin, landed and found seven women living there. They were the only survivors, having existed on shellfish, turtle and brackish water. He took them to Mauritius.
