Mauritius - Vegetation

I was surprised at the density of vegetation, for despite the rugged nature of the slopes and the apparent lack of soil, latan palms (Latania loddigesii) and pandanus or screwpines (Pandanus vandermeerschi) covered the majority of the western slopes. I recalled photographs of these same slopes looking barren and lifeless, taken in previous years, when the goats and rabbits were still present. The difference was absolutely remarkable and it was clear that the palm savanna was beginning to recover. The helicopter swung in over the south coast and landed on the one flat piece of rock on the island. It was not long before I spotted our first visitor, a Telfair’s skink, scurrying over a hot rock surface towards the camp. It was followed by three more, then a further four from various directions. This large skink often reaches a length of 1ft. It is very bold, showing no fear of man, and congregates around visitors. Because they are highly adept at locating any food, all supplies had to be stored in ‘skink-proof’ boxes well above the ground. The skinks also prey on smaller lizards present, namely Bojer’s skinks, night geckos and ornate day geckos.
