Mauritius - Education

The education system is on the French model, with primary schools, collèges (10–15 years) and lycées (15–18 years). State-run schools in Réunion suffer from the same problems as those in mainland France (la Métropole), such as overcrowded classes, underfunding and poor morale amongst teachers. Both teachers and pupils follow French counterparts by striking at regular intervals.

The University of St-Denis gained university status in 1982 and offers a good range of courses, including modules in Creole studies, Creole-language classes and tropical environment studies. There are around 12,000  students at the university.

It is possible for foreign students to study at the University of St-Denis on an exchange programme, although competition for places can be fierce. The ERASMUS programme allows students already at university in the European Union to study for a year in another European university, which of course includes St-Denis. Speak to your university or contact the University of St-Denis (% 0262 938322; f 0262 938006; e contact[at]univ-reunion.fr; univ-reunion.fr). The International Student Exchange Programme provides similar opportunities for students in the US. For more information visit isep.org.
