Mauritius - The Interior

No visit to Réunion is complete without at least a few days spent exploring the magnificent, mountainous interior.

Visitors cannot fail to be impressed by the island’s three natural amphitheatres (the Cirques of Salazie, Cilaos and Mafate), with their imposing green mountains, punctuated by waterfalls plunging down steep gorges. The island’s interior also boasts the highest mountain in the Indian Ocean (Piton-des-Neiges, 3,069m) and one of our planet’s most active volcanoes, the monstrous 2,631m Piton-de-la-Fournaise (see Chapter 18, Eastern Réunion, pages 294–5).

There are also the two upland plains: Plaine-des-Palmistes is adjacent to spectacular and vast primary forests, while the much higher Plaine-des-Cafres is surrounded by dairy farms, evoking images of the Swiss Alps in summer. This noticeable resemblance to the Alps is enhanced by quaint mountain villages with charming architecture, a backdrop of imposing slopes and a reputation for producing excellent cheeses.

The best way to explore the interior, particularly the cirques, is on foot. Over 1,000km of hiking trails criss-cross the island, attracting enthusiasts from around the globe (see Hiking in Chapter 16, Activities, pages 269–72).
