There is a supermarket on Rue du Père Boiteau, as well as bakeries, greengroceries and butcher’s shops. The covered market (marché couvert) on the main street (Rue du Père Boiteau) sells fruit and vegetables, meat, a variety of local jams (goyavier, papaya, etc) and sweet Cilaos wine.

A selection of Creole dishes & grilled meat & fish; vegetarians may struggle. More reasonably priced than many of its competitors. Main courses (caris & accompaniments) from €11, 3-course menus from €16, including aperitif (house punch) & digestif (rhum arrangé). $$$

X Chez Noé 40 Rue du Père Boiteau, Cilaos; % 0262 317993; ( 10.00–15.00 & 18.00–21.00 Tue–Sun. Cuisine: Creole. Popular restaurant in a pink Creole house in the centre of Cilaos. Traditional homemade food in an atmospheric setting, complete with log fire. $$$

X Le Cottage 2 Chemin des Saules, Cilaos; % 0262 310461; ( for lunch & dinner Thu–Tue, closed Sun evening. Cuisine: Creole, French. This restaurant has fine views from the edge of Mare à Joncs Lake & serves good-quality food. Outdoor dining is a pleasure in summer. $$$

Wide range of dishes with specialities including duck cari with corn & the delicious home-smoked pork with Cilaos lentils. The restaurant’s excellent reputation is well deserved. Reservation recommended, particularly for dinner. $$$

X Le Platane 46 Rue du Père Boiteau; % 0262 317723; ( for lunch & dinner, closed Wed. Cuisine: Creole, French, Italian. Neat little restaurant in a yellow & green Creole house in the centre of town. Wi-Fi available. $$

X Petit Randonneur 60 Rue du Père Boiteau; % 0262 317955; ( 09.00–18.00, closed Tue afternoon & Wed. Cuisine: Creole. $$

X Tsilaosa Tearooms 21 Rue du Père Boiteau, Cilaos; % 0262 373939; (14.00–17.00. The Tsilaosa Hotel serves a range of exotic teas, pancakes & homemade cakes as afternoon tea, in comfortable surroundings. The fireplace near reception is a real feature – a copper still salvaged from a sugar factory that was being demolished. $$

Other practicalities

Money and banking There is no bank but there is an ATM outside the post office. To be on the safe side, it is best to bring sufficient cash with you as this is the only ATM in Cilaos and it cannot always be relied upon.

Communications The post office is in the main street through the village (Rue du Père Boiteau), not far from the church. Internet access is available at the tourist office.

Medical The hospital (% 0262 317050) is at Les Mares and there are two pharmacies on the main street, Rue du Père Boiteau.
