An unusual accommodation option for Rodrigues, with a sophisticated, European feel. This is probably because the owners, Mr & Mrs Verbeek Comarmond (a Belgian man married to a Mauritian) lived in France for many years. Marie-Line Comarmond is well known for her homemade jams, honey & chutneys (Marie Island Products), which you will have the chance to taste at breakfast. The house & grounds are beautifully maintained & the European-style furnishings create an atmosphere of elegance. There are 3 en-suite rooms around the main house plus a new section of rooms & villas in a separate complex, known as Les Pavillons. Les Pavillons allows families to have separate rooms within the same villa; the villas are around a central courtyard with pool & bar area. $$$

The en-suite rooms & 2 suites are housed in sea-facing 2-storey buildings. Rooms are spacious & have AC, TV, phone, minibar & small safe. It has a pool, restaurant, games room, tennis court, kids’ club, good dive centre & watersports, including kitesurfing (payable). There are pleasant, albeit rocky, beaches in the area but it’s an unattractive, windswept location & by Rodriguan standards is a long way from anywhere (30mins from Port Mathurin & 45mins from the airport). $$$

The 6 rooms & 2 apartments with kitchenette are clean, spacious, comfortable & have sea views. They are equipped with AC, TV & balcony. There is a restaurant serving Rodriguan meals & séga shows on the weekends. A range of excursions & activities can be arranged. $$$

There are 2 family apartments with kitchenette. The restaurant is one of the better ones on Rodrigues. From the pool area you can walk directly onto the beach. Reef shoes are advisable as it is stony. Wi-Fi available. $$$

Perched on a hillside facing a vast lagoon & Ile aux Chats, this is a very popular hotel so book well in advance. The rooms are housed in neat, red-roofed chalets set in beautiful gardens. Rooms are simply furnished with en-suite facilities, AC, fridge & small terrace. There are no phones or TV. The villa is in a separate building with its own small pool; 2 bedrooms upstairs, kitchen & sitting room downstairs. There is a good restaurant with a bar, & a small pool overlooking the ocean. There are mountain bikes for hire, a dive centre & a very well-equipped windsurfing, sailing & kitesurfing school – Kite for Fun. The hotel organises a range of excursions & evening entertainment. $$$

Opened in 2004, this is, in theory, the island’s most upmarket hotel, claiming to offer the equivalent of 4-star accommodation & facilities. However, consistently scathing reports on the service & food have plagued the hotel. It is about 3km from Port Mathurin, overlooking the town & the ocean. The rooms are comfortable & clean, with AC, TV, phone, minibar, safe, tea/coffee facilities (payable) & balcony/terrace. For families, there are apartments designed to take 2 adults & 2 children. There are 2 restaurants, a bar, 2 pools (1 for children), gym, massage rooms, dive centre & kids’ club. Activities such as deep-sea fishing can be organised. There is no beach to speak of in front of the hotel but there is a good beach about 500m away. $$$

Accommodation at the top of the hill overlooking Port Mathurin, which is less than a 5min drive away. Rooms are en suite & have TV, phone & minibar. In 2009, Françoise & Laval Baptiste, owners of Auberge de la Montagne, opened their new small hotel on the coast at Graviers. It is in a fantastic location, completely off the beaten track on a hill overlooking the beach & with some wonderful coastal walks nearby. The sea-facing, en-suite rooms are in 2-storey buildings. They are warmly decorated in tropical colours & feel new & clean. There is a pool, an excellent little restaurant with wonderful ocean views & a small spa. Excursions & activities, such as a Creole cookery course with Françoise, can be arranged. $$
