WHAT TO SEE IN NORTHERN REUNION

JARDIN DE L’ETAT (Place de Metz,  St-Denis; ( 06.00–18.00 daily; admission free) At the southern end of Rue de Paris is this botanical garden, which features 2,000 species from around the world. It was originally created in 1773 by the French East India Company. It is a beautiful, tranquil place in which to spend a few hours. Guided visits start at 09.30, 11.00, 13.00, 14.45 and 16.30 Monday to Friday.

MUSEE D’HISTOIRE NATURELLE (1 Rue Poivre, St-Denis; % 0262 200219; e museum[at]cg974.fr; ( 09.30–17.30 Tue–Sun; admission adult/child €2/1) Natural history museum housed in a colonial building in the Jardin de l’Etat. Exhibits extinct and rare species of the western Indian Ocean, including the solitaire, Réunion’s dodo-like bird.

MUSEE LEON DIERX (28 Rue de Paris, St-Denis; % 0262 202482; e musee.dierx[at]cg974.fr; cg974.fr; ( 09.30–12.00 & 13.00–17.30 Tue–Sun; admission €2) The museum opened in 1911 in the former bishop’s residence. Well worth a visit, it houses original works by the likes of Gauguin, Maufra, Erro, Chen Zen and even Picasso. There is wheelchair access in Rue Ste-Marie.

MUSEE DE LA VRAIE FRATERNITE (28 Bd de la Providence, St-Denis; % 0262 210671; ( 09.00–17.00 Wed & Sat; admission adult/child €2/1) Exhibits are designed to represent the island’s different communities and cultures throughout their history.

LA MAISON CARRERE (14 Rue de Paris, St-Denis; % 0262 418300; f 0262 213776; e maisoncarrere[at]lebeaupays.com; lebeaupays.com; ( 09.00–18.00 Mon–Sat; admission adult/child €3/1.50) Self-guided or guided tours (guided tours every hour) of the attractive Creole mansion which now houses the tourist office. The house was originally built in 1820 as a simple, single-storey wooden building. In 1905, Raphaël Carrère, who had made his fortune in the sugar industry, moved into the house with his wife and five children. They extended the house and added the upper floor. The house has been carefully restored and is decorated as it would have been during the days of the Carrère family. 

JARDIN DE CENDRILLON (48 Route des Palmiers, 97417 La Montagne; % 0262 418300; m 0692 817010; e lejardindecendrillon[at]wanadoo.fr; tours last 1½hrs & cost adult/child €8/4) Pleasant private garden in the hills above St-Denis, created in 1935. The orchids are a particular feature. Guided tours must be booked in advance.

ST-DENIS DES RELIGIONS (% 0692 863288; e contact[at]guid-a-nou.com; guid-a-nou.com; guided tours on Sat, €15) A guided tour of places of worship of the various religions represented in St-Denis, including the Noor-e-Islam Mosque, a Buddhist temple and a Roman Catholic Church.

ARTOTHEQUE (26 Rue de Paris, 97400 St-Denis; % 0262 417550; ( 09.30–17.30 Tue–Sun) This contemporary art gallery exhibits work from regional artists.
