A Hilton Mauritius Resort & Spa (193 rooms) Wolmar; % 403 1000; f 403 1111; e info_mauritius[at]hilton.com; hilton.com. Forget all images that you have of Hilton hotels as concrete monstrosities in smoggy city centres. This is an architecturally striking hotel with grand gardens & public areas. It is particularly beautiful at night when flaming torches are lit around the grounds with great ceremony at 19.00 by members of staff who may normally go unseen, such as boat house, gardening & kitchen staff. The sea-facing rooms & suites include 2 rooms with disabled facilities. Rooms have all that you’d expect from a first-class hotel & are decorated in warm colours. There are lots of activities during the day & entertainment 3 evenings per week. The 4 restaurants include 1 excellent Thai. The spa offers all manner of pampering & there are plenty of land & watersports available, many of which are included. There is a kids’ club & gorgeous pools. A popular hotel for conferences, which are most common between May & Sep, should you wish to avoid them. $$$$

A Sofitel Imperial Hotel (191 rooms) Wolmar; % 453 8700; f 453 8320; e h1144[at]sofitel.com; sofitel.com. The hotel looks like a Thai temple from the outside & there is a serenity within. The recently renovated rooms & suites have all the facilities of an upmarket hotel, including free internet access. The beds here are Sofitel’s ‘my bed’ & are particularly comfortable. There are 5 restaurants, a pool, gym, tennis, watersports, a dive centre & an Asia-inspired spa. The hotel is popular with families & there is a kids’ club. It is worth noting the family suites overlook the garden & not the sea. The Wine Corner restaurant allows you to sample a different, suggested wine with each course. $$$$
A Sugar Beach Resort (258 rooms) Wolmar; % 453 9090; f 453 9100; e info[at] sugarbeachresort.mu; sugarbeachresort.com. The interconnecting rooms are ideal for families. The 3 restaurants, including 1 Italian ,offer an excellent variety of cuisine. There are 2 pools, a gym, watersports, kids’ club & teenagers’ club. One of the pools is designated as ‘quiet’ which means you shouldn’t be bothered by other people’s children. The spa is impressive – the large hammam is wonderful & can be booked for 30mins free usage. The hotel is spread along 500m of beautiful beach & there is a wonderful feeling of space, so however full the hotel may be it is unlikely to feel crowded. The sunsets are fabulous. Guests can use some of the facilities at neighbouring La Pirogue. $$$$
A The Sands Resort (91 rooms) Wolmar; % 403 1200; f 453 5300; e thesands[at]intnet.mu; thesandsresort.mu. Less luxurious than many of its exclusive neighbours (a 4-star equivalent rather than 5), but very comfortable & welcoming. The rooms are modern & particularly large, with huge en-suite bathrooms (with bath & shower), AC, TV, phone, minibar & safe. All rooms face the sea. The pool is fairly small but there is a good stretch of beach. The hotel targets couples & there is a spa but no kids’ club. There are 3 restaurants, a bar, dive centre & some watersports are included. Unusually for a hotel of this type, the Sands welcomes outsiders, including locals, to their entertainment evenings. Fri night dinner, entertainment & dancing are particularly popular with locals, who mingle with the hotel guests. $$$$

A Pearle Beach Resort & Spa (74 rooms) Coastal Rd, Wolmar; % 401 6300; f 453 8405; e pearle[at]intnet.mu; pearle-beach.com. A complete renovation has significantly improved this hotel. All but 10 of the rooms face the pool/sea, so try to get 1 that does. The rooms are nicely decorated with en suite, AC, flat-screen TV, phone, internet access (payable), safe, minibar & tea/coffee facilities. There is only 1 restaurant but in a hotel of this small size that isn’t really an issue & there are plenty of restaurants nearby. There is a pool, small spa, watersports & evening entertainment. There is no kids’ club but babysitting can be provided (payable). Considering the location, this is reasonable value for money. $$$
A Gold Beach Resort (31 rooms) Coastal Rd, Wolmar; % 453 8235; e goldbeach[at]intnet.mu; goldbeachresort.com. A small property on a good stretch of beach. The architecture is unusual – a series of round, white cottages. Rooms have en suite, AC, TV, phone, safe & tea/coffee facilities. There is a restaurant, pool, gym & entertainment 3 evenings per week. Watersports are available nearby (payable). I have heard reports of poor service. $$$
