The suites are arranged in crescents, each with a pool at the centre. The emphasis is on relaxation & luxury. The junior suites have a light, airy bedroom & sitting area, plus a huge bathroom. The senior suites have a separate sitting room with dining area. All suites have a large covered veranda looking out to sea. Rooms have everything you’d expect from a top hotel, including internet access. There are 4 excellent restaurants, numerous pools, tennis & a fitness centre. There is a Clarins spa, which also offers Ayurvedic treatments. If the calm here becomes too much you can head next door to the livelier Paradis & use the facilities or eat at one of the restaurants; there is a regular shuttle service. Watersports take place here & at Paradis. Guests have access (payable) to the Paradis Golf Academy, Heritage Golf Club & the course at Tamarina Golf Estate & Beach Club. $$$$$

This huge Beachcomber resort boasts an 18-hole golf course, deep-sea fishing, dive centre & 4 restaurants . The hotel is fronted by 5km of beach & uses lots of traditional materials, like wood & thatch. Rooms have the usual upmarket facilities & are particularly spacious; there are also 13 luxury villas. Sports are free, except golf, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing & mountain biking. The tennis facilities are exceptional – 6 floodlit courts. There are 4 restaurants, a spa & kids’ club. Guests can use many of the facilities, including the restaurants, at the Dinarobin Hotel. Great for families & sports enthusiasts.
Upmarket

The hotel lies at the end of the peninsula in a windy spot, making it popular with kitesurfers & windsurfers but not suitable if you want to lounge on the sand. Rooms are equipped with AC, TV, minibar & safe; they are large but unappealing & feel in need of refurbishment. 4 rooms have disabled facilities. Facilities include 3 pools, kids’ & teenagers’ clubs, a fitness centre & spa. Overall the service, decor & cuisine fall short of most upmarket hotels. $$$$

Rooms & suites are in 2-storey colonial-style villas. They are nicely decorated with AC, TV, minibar, safe, free Wi-Fi & sea-facing balcony/terrace. There are 3 restaurants, 3 bars, 3 pools, a spa, numerous free watersports, a dive centre, gym & tennis courts. There are both kids’ & teenagers’ clubs. $$$$
Mid range

Elegant boutique accommodation in 11 villas for 2 or 3 people, set in a stunning tropical garden. The rooms have an air of luxury & encourage relaxation with thoughtful inclusions like the outdoor shower. There are 3 suites with private pool & garden. There is a TV room, small spa, 2 pools & a restaurant serving breakfast & dinner. A wonderful, private retreat. $$$
A Les Lataniers Bleus (3 villas, 2 rooms) La Mivoie, Rivière Noire; % 483 6541; f 483 6903; e latableu[at]intnet.mu; leslataniersbleus.com. A good budget option but priced at the bottom end of mid-range. The clean, simple villas, each with 2 to 5 bedrooms, are set in pretty gardens. You can either rent the whole villa or just 1 en-suite bedroom. The location is quiet – on the beach. Villas have a living room, kitchen, dining area, AC, TV & phone. There is a pool, Wi-Fi access & a good table d’hôte restaurant. $$$

The hotel sports a 1970s theme, so prepare to be amazed by colours you never knew existed. Rooms have en-suite facilities, AC, phone, safe & balcony/terrace. The 2-bedroom villas also have TV & minibar, while the suites have a separate living room. There are 2 restaurants, a pool & a kids’ club. The hotel is known for its kitesurfing school, & other watersports are available nearby (payable). $$$

A 4-star equivalent hotel on the beachfront within the Tamarina Golf Estate. Rooms are nicely furnished with all the facilities you would expect of a 4-star resort. The hotel is not designed to accommodate young children – there are no communicating rooms, no extra bed in the rooms & no kids’ club. As well as the 18-hole championship golf course, there are 2 restaurants, tennis, watersports, 4 pools & a spa. The hotel’s AI package includes green fees, 1 golf lesson, a spa treatment, entrance to Casela $$$

A lovely little hotel featuring traditional thatched buildings, on the beach at La Preneuse. Rooms are modern, clean, nicely decorated & have AC, TV, phone, safe, Wi-Fi (free) & minibar. Superior rooms & suites face the sea & have tea/coffee facilities & balcony/terrace. The public areas have a fresh, beachy feel; there is an open-air restaurant overlooking the pool & the sea. A yoga/pilates teacher offers sessions at the hotel, as well as massages & natural therapies. There are a few watersports available at a fee. $$$
Budget

Delightfully rustic self-catering accommodation on a working farm, which grows pineapples, sugarcane & palm trees. There is a 3-bedroom house & 2 cottages with 1 bedroom each. The 1-bedroom cottages have AC, while the 3-bedroom house has fans. The large house & one of the cottages have a fireplace on the terrace for cool winter evenings; each has a garden area. There are no TVs, no internet, just a wonderful opportunity for total relaxation. The décor is rustic but very nicely done in traditional Creole style. The farm is on a hill with views of the surrounding countryside. Guests can wander the farm on foot or on a guided horseride from the well-run stables. There is a small pool with a little bar on a hill in the middle of the property, a very peaceful spot. This is one of few Mauritian properties which takes recycling seriously & does what it can to limit its impact on the environment. Dbl/sgl from €86/65 RO, breakfast can be provided for €6 pp, dinner for €12 pp. $$

Pretty wooden mountain lodges with 2 or 3 AC bedrooms, living/dining area, fireplace, TV & kitchenette. Guided hikes of the surrounding forests are available, & guests can fish for berry rouge in the lake. A pleasant mountain escape. $$
A Les Palmiers (5 rooms) Chamarel; % 483 8364. Simple accommodation in the hills of Chamarel, above the restaurant of the same name (see below). Dbl from €35 BB. $$

Rooms are in a thatched 3-storey building facing the pool & colourful garden. They have a modern feel & are equipped with trendy en suite, AC, TV, safe & minibar. Also 2 self-catering bungalows available. Breakfast is served near the pool; there are 2 bars but no restaurant, although there are plenty nearby. Wi-Fi available. Not on the beach but near the marina from where catamaran & deep-sea fishing excursions leave. It would be wise to have a car if staying here so you can get to the beach at Flic en Flac & try the local eateries. A great budget option.
