X La Varangue sur Morne Coeur Bois; % 483 5710; varanguesurmorne.com; ( for lunch daily, dinner by arrangement. Cuisine: Creole, European, game, seafood. If you can get a table on the open side of the restaurant or outside there are wonderful views of the surrounding mountains & down to the coast. You do need to book for lunch. It is a popular stop for organised tours, which tend to arrive at about 13.30. There are usually no tour groups on weekends. Expect to pay around Rs1,200 for a 3-course set menu. Next to the restaurant is a small wood museum. $$$$

X Le Chamarel Chamarel; % 483 6421; lechamarelrestaurant.com; ( for lunch daily. Cuisine: Creole, European, game, seafood. You feel perched on the edge of the world as you sit on the veranda overlooking forest, plain & sea. The menu is extensive. It’s advisable to book, & tour groups stop here from about 13.00 on Wed & Sat. There is a small souvenir shop. $$$$

X Bistrot du Barachois Route du Barachois, Tamarin; % 483 7594; ( for lunch & dinner Tue–Sat. Cuisine: French, seafood. On a privately owned hunting estate, dining is on a covered terrace overlooking a river. An upmarket European menu with a Mauritian twist – prawns with garlic butter, duck with raspberry sauce, pineapple tart. $$$

X Zucca Ruisseau Creole, Rivière Noire; % 483 7005; ( for lunch & dinner daily. Cuisine: Italian, seafood. The Italian chef prepares a good range of dishes, including homemade pasta. $$$

X Embafilao Le Morne Peninsula; % 401 4085; ( 08.30–15.30 daily. Cuisine: Creole, Chinese, seafood. On the public beach near Les Pavillions Hotel. Casual outdoor dining at reasonable prices. Expect to pay around Rs150 for a grilled fish skewer. Take-away available. $$

X La Bonne Chute La Preneuse; % 483 6552; ( for lunch & dinner Mon–Sat. Cuisine: European, Creole, seafood, game. It may not look like much from the outside but this restaurant has a reputation for good food, although some travellers report an air of nonchalance. $$

X Les Palmiers Chamarel; % 483 8364; ( 10.00–17.00 daily. Cuisine: Creole. Mrs Beehary has turned part of her home in the village of Chamarel into a cosy restaurant. Traditional Creole food, made using homegrown ingredients, is served on banana leaves. Great value. $$
